The Big 30 at Chisenhale

October 30, 2013

Visiting Chisenhale Dance Space just off the Roman Rd near Mile End this past few weeks has been very satisfying. Satisfying as it’s good to experience a run of events that fall within a themed season of activities that have relevance and the relevance for me is contemporary dance, its developments and its deviations. I’ve liked ‘O’ by Alexandrina Helmsley and Jamila Johnson-Small of the collective Bellyflop: ‘A dance duet about being black, mixed and female’; liked hearing Prof Anna Furse, Jacky Lansley and Charlotte Vincent talk about dance and feminism; liked Antonio de la Fe’s Open Lab on the theme of space – despite hip pain to follow it was well worth it; liked the four hour talk-shop on the history of X6 with Dr Emilyn Claid, Mary Prestidge, Jacky Lansley and Fergus Earley OBE and friends. Still lots to enjoy upcoming but already the frame of references is rich.
